In the 1950s, sealed clear plastic introduced shelf-presence, shelf-life, anti-soil, anti-damage, anti-pilferage, tamper evidence and other benefits. In the 1990s, ecologists began pushing to reduce/remove PVC from packaging. The push started the move toward sustainability. Simpl-Seal® saw an opportunity to support sustainability and reduce packaging costs (improve profitability). Note: Packaging change is risky. So, Simpl-Seal® provides INVISIBLE-to-the-consumer changes that use eco-friendly materials, conserve energy and reduce weight/bulk. INVISIBLE changes do not impact buying habits. Note: Many major merchandisers offer marketing incentives to reward sustainable packaging. Suzanne Fenton, CPP, wrote in Packaging World, “Often seen as the ‘bad guy,’ packaging can actually contribute to a company’s sustainability goals. But proper research and knowledgeable package design and sourcing are essential.” The article appears to say eco-responsibility comes from good choices that reduce costs or are cost neutral. There are many choices that will improve sustainability, but the “big five” are: 1. Reduction in materials: Simpl-Seal offers choices to reduce plastic and paper (materials). UV “will process” current packaging, but “can process” less material without changing outward appearance (invisible). 2. Increased recyclability: Simpl-Seal allows recycle-friendly packaging materials (invisible-to-the-consumer). And UV is flexible enough to avoid material contamination so, Simpl-Seal provides source-separability. 3. Eco-friendlier materials: Simpl-Seal uses PLA (bio), RPET and PCR (recycled). This variety of eco-friendly plastics are invisible-to-the-consumer and cost less or are cost-neutral (profitable and sustainable). 4. Reduced energy consumption: More energy efficiency (up to10X more) is the easiest, most invisible and best path to eco-responsibility (and profitability) 5. Decreased packaging cost: Simpl-Seal saves tooling, energy and material. These savings are INVISIBLE to consumers, yet VISIBLE in profit reports. Reduced cost is the "economic incentive" to be more eco-responsible. “In its simplest terms, sustainability is about reducing waste and increasing efficiency…” November, Package Design Magazine, Ron Romanik, Editor-in-Chief. Sustainability... Consumers want it, merchandisers ask for it and the environment needs it. With Simpl-Seal, the environment, consumer, merchandiser and packager all win... it is that simple. |
